A Taste of the West: Top 5 Canarian Dishes to Try Locally

Authentic Flavors: 5 Must-Try Canarian Dishes

If you’re staying at Naos Beach Studio, you are perfectly positioned in the "sunny larder" of La Palma. While the views from the promenade are world-class, the flavors coming out of the local kitchens are what truly capture the soul of the island.

Canarian cuisine is humble, honest, and packed with volcanic intensity. Beyond our favorite local haunts like Ca'Yeya Bistro, here are the five essential flavors you must experience while staying on the west side of the island.

1. Papas Arrugadas con Mojo (Wrinkled Potatoes)

This is the undisputed king of Canarian food. These aren't just any potatoes; they are small, local varieties boiled in salt-heavy water until the skins shrivel and develop a fine salt crust.

  • The Secret: It’s all in the sauce. You’ll be served two types of Mojo: Rojo (red, slightly spicy with pimentón) and Verde (green, with coriander or parsley).

  • Top Tip: Don't peel them! The skin is where the flavor lives.

2. Almogrote (The Cheese Lover's Dream)

Hailing originally from the neighboring island of La Gomera but a staple here in La Palma, Almogrote is a thick, spicy cheese paste. It’s made from hard-cured goat's cheese, garlic, oil, and pepper. It’s the ultimate appetizer when spread on toasted bread.

3. Fresh "Pescado del Día" (Catch of the Day)

In Puerto Naos and the nearby Port of Tazacorte, "fresh" means it was in the Atlantic just a few hours ago.

  • What to order: Look for Vieja (Parrotfish)—the most traditional fish of the islands—with its delicate white meat. Cherne (Wreckfish) is another meaty, delicious local favorite often served grilled (a la espalda).

  • Where to find it: While Puerto Naos has excellent local options, we highly recommend a short 10-minute drive to Puerto de Tazacorte. The harbor restaurants specialize in landing the freshest catch directly from the colorful fishing boats. It’s the perfect excursion for a slow lunch after a morning swim.

4. Queso Asado con Mojo (Grilled Cheese with Mojo)

This is the most typical starter on La Palma. We take our award-winning Queso Palmero (smoked goat cheese), lightly grill it until it’s warm and soft, and top it with a generous swirl of both red and green mojo. It is simple, salty, and perfection.

5. Chicharrones

For those who like something savory and crispy, Chicharrones are fried pieces of pork belly seasoned with gofio (toasted grain flour), sugar, and lemon. They are the perfect accompaniment to a cold Dorada beer while watching the paragliders land on the beach.

Where to Eat Like a Local in 2026: Puerto Naos & Beyond

While Puerto Naos is vibrantly reclaiming its spot as a culinary hub, the "West Side" food scene is thriving in the resilient hubs nearby.

Head to the Puerto de Tazacorte for the best beachfront fish restaurants, or drive up to Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso to find traditional Mesones and Tascas. In these family-run spots, the menu often changes based on what was harvested from the local fincas that morning.

Staying at Naos Beach Studio means you are only a 5-minute walk from the best seaside terraces. You can enjoy a lunch of fresh fish and papas arrugadas, then head back to the studio for a quiet siesta before the sunset.

Local Tip: Don't miss the local Malvasía wine. The grapes are grown in volcanic ash (ceniza), and every glass supports the farmers who continue to cultivate this unique landscape.

Is your mouth watering yet?

When you stay at Naos Beach Studio, you’re just steps away from the best terraces in the west. After a day of tasting the island, come home to the comfort of your studio and watch the sunset with a glass of local wine.
